Wisdom of Aging

As I get older and older each year, I have come to the conclusion that getting old sucks.  I think most people will agree with me on this.  It just sucks.

First, I’m not happy at ALL about getting fat. Second…things HURT.  They just do.  It really really hurts when you fall down, and sometimes, even when you do absolutely nothing at all, it hurts.  For no good reason!  When nothing is wrong!  I don’t like it.

I started having this weird, didn’t do anything to cause it, never been heard of by me before, upper back pain.

It happened in September (when traveling to Nashville for the MOPS conference) and thankfully after one day of pretty intense pain….slowly went away on it’s own.

This past Monday…it started up again.  First kinda under my shoulderblade, then stiffness all up my neck, numbness down my arm…and lots of pain.

So I did the same stretches and exercises I had looked up from September.  Started taking some Motrin.  More stretches, more Motrin.  It was pretty bad by Thursday morning, so I emailed a friend that happens to be a chiropractor for advice.

I went to a meeting, and during the meeting I could feel everything stiffening up.  But I was still okay. Didn’t realize how bad it was until I got up and began walking down to Chris’s office.

By the time I got down there, I was almost in tears.

Chris wasn’t there, but the girl he shares an office with was.  I carefully sat in his chair and asked if she knew anyone in Morgantown that might be able to see me right away.  Right away, she named the same friend I had emailed.  I checked my mail and found instructions to call her office and she’d do whatever she could to help.

Sure enough, they got me right in (even though the chiro I had seen for quite some time would not).  At this point, I was in so much pain I couldn’t look up at all, surely couldn’t drive, so Chris had to take me over.  Needless to say, I didn’t much care WHAT anyone did to me, as long as it helped.  If they had instructed the office janitor to walk on my neck, I would have let him.

My friend was booked up, but her husband had a cancelled appointment (they practice together) so he did xrays, told me about what they do, then did the adjustment.

I’ll admit, I was pretty skeptical.  My previous chiropractor used this little activator thingy (uses air to allign spine) which was pretty gentle….but they use this NUCCA method that I had never heard before.  After all the xrays, they measured, drew reference points, calculated angles…..and barely touched my neck.

I was still in alot of pain when we left the office (some serious muscular pain…which I didn’t expect  to go away immediately).  Before bed, I thought I was feeling a little better, but didn’t want to get my hopes up.

Then this morning, I woke up….and felt fine.  No pain at all.

So while I was pretty dubious, even after coming home and reading up on NUCCA….I feel pretty darn great today!  I still don’t understand how or why it works…but it does.

The only thing that could make it better would be if I knew why I started hurting in the first place…and what I could do to never feel that way again!
