What to do with doggie doo….

with 4 comments

…well I did it! I made our very own doggie doo composting thingamajigger. Here’s the whole project.

I started with a 24 quart garbage can. It’s small….I didn’t want to dig a huge hole. Plus, we have a very small dog. Now, what is going to happen when my mom’s Dane visits, I don’t know. But since I hat digging holes, it’s what we’ve got. Basically, any can with a lid will do. I got one that the lid latches on…just to be safe. If it were black (black heats up more. Heat is also good for composting), it would be better, but I couldn’t find a black one.

Then, I drilled a ton of little air holes. More air is better. I also cut the bottom out. See, Care Bear shows you the hole in the bottom.

This was certainly a job for the Dremel. My mom tried to buy me a Dremel for a year before I caved and accepted it. Now that I have it….well, I find lots of things to do with it.

Next, you’ve got to dig a hole. I wanted one big enough that the top of the can (and the latches) are just above ground level. Be sure to dig it deep enough for a layer of gravel.

Then, throw some gravel in there. I used what I had laying around. You want good drainage. (Note – if you have clay soil….this may not be a good project for you. Clay does not allow good drainage. I guess is might work if you dig an extra large hole, put in an extra huge amount of gravel….but that’s a lot of work!)

Put the can in, add more gravel inside the can.

Find a cute little girl to help you fill in dirt around the can.

Viola.

And from the porch. Barely noticable.

I will probably extend the bed around it eventually and surround it some of that invasive (but not too tall) ornamental grass that I can’t control from the front beds.

All in all, it wasn’t too bad. The whole project probably took me (and my helper) about two hours. The ground was wet, but not soggy, so it was pretty easy digging.
