Current State of Growing Things

with 2 comments

Took some pics last night of what we have going on in the gardens.

I got three Hydraneas for Mother’s Day and got those planted. Just curious, does anyone know how big they have to be before they flower?

Also, here are my topsy turvy tomato baskets. Tomatoes out the bottom, flowers on the top.

I got some pretty tiny petunias for the top.

And cut holes for the tomatoes and stuck them out the bottom. These are all cherry tomato plants…it’s our first year for these, I’m hoping they will thrive! Right now they are trying to grow back UP.

This is the planter with broccoli and cauliflower. I’m not sure about these guys. They don’t seem to have grown much since I planted them almost a month ago. But they aren’t dead. I don’t know what their deal is.

Some of our strawberries. We picked and ate the red ones yesterday….but have more coming in.

Photobucket

The finished area around the doggy poo composter (which seems to be working well, by the way). Note the big hole in the grasses and daisies….that’s where Jordan keeps busting through to retrieve toys from the neighbor’s yard.

The peas. I’m still not happy with my climbing structure this year. I’m thinking of something like Kathi has for her beans for next year.

We also planted a couple rows of carrots. I thought the tops might look pretty as a border…and if we get some carrots to eat out of the deal, all the better.

Photobucket

I also planted a few rows of beets. Strange, I know. But again with the pretty tops….and someone was telling me about this roasted beet salad that was surprisingly fabulous (and really good for you). The packet of seeds was $1, so I thought it was worth a try.

How strange is this? One of my trees is flowering only on the top. Like a little hat or something.

I’ve got nasturtium planted around the base of this tree, and my backyard tree, and a few to fill in the space in my front beds. I’m going to plant more next year, because these are SO easy to grow. You honestly just throw the seeds on the ground and that’s it. Also, they like crappy soil. No flowers yet, but look how pretty these little plants are!

Photobucket

Unfortunately, I have no eye for design. The front of the house, even with the daisies, roses, lillies, pokers, nasturtium, and dahlias…..it looks like crap.

Photobucket

I’m hoping it will look better once everything starts to flower. I need ideas for next year though….need to make this look better. With perennials people. I don’t like to spend money every year.

I’m sure you’ve noticed, but I’ve got a lot of daisies. All of these ere started from one seed packet about 8 years ago. They’ve been moved and transplanted and I gave about half of them away this yes, and we still have a ton. I like it because Celia can pick and pick and pick daisies…and we’ll still have plenty in the yard.

Lastly, these are my weeds. Yeah, they are dead. I’m proud of myself. I looked up a recipe for home made environmentally friendly weed killer, I made it, and it worked!

Some of the big guys could use another dousing, but I’m very happy with the results. Now I just need to get around to removing the dead weeds……..
