Why do I cook for these people?

with 6 comments

Seriously.  Why?

Tonight’s dinner (a healthy version of Fettuccine Carbonara and salad) went like this:

Jordan picked the ham pieces out and ate them.  Had some plain lettuce.  Tried to say he was eating, but really, just used his fork to peek under the noodles in search of more ham.

Celia ate 3 chunks of broccoli (I discovered we were out of peas and subbed broccoli), a disgusting amount of catalina dressing….then she put the ham chunks on some lettuce, rolled it up and snuck it to the dog under the table.  Oh, and she hed up the noodles, swung them like a lasso, before pronoucing them “swimey” (slimey for those of you who don’t speak toddler) because sneaking those to the dog as well.  Is it any wonder that Bennie follows her around like she’s a doggie vending machine?

Chris ate two huge helpings of salad drenched in catalina, then ate the broccoli and some of the noodles, while meticulously avoiding the ham.  Because he doesn’t trust that any meat I prepare has been cooked or stored accordingly.  The man who will eat pizza that has been sitting out for who knows how long at work must constantly pose this question to me “Are you sure this meat is done” or “Are you sure this meat is good”.  Note – I’ve never ONCE given him (or myself, of anyone I know) food poisoning.

Also, he is very against my healthy living pact.  He thinks I’ve gone way overboard in trying to eliminate HFCS from our diets.  I got mad last week because the only HFCS free ketchup I could find was WAY too expensive, so I decided to make my own.  Celia and I, we made ketchup.  It was even freaking organic ketchup because the tomato sauce that I get free just happens to be organic.

Of course, I had to dump out the little bit of chemical laden ketchup from the bottle so I would have one to use…so now my home made ketchup is the only option.

You’d think I was trying to feed the man nuclear waste by how he avoids that ketchup.   It all culminated this weekend when he went to get hot dogs.   He refused to eat the ketchup, I gave him a hard time.

Chris- FINE.  Give me the freaking ketchup.

Me – No.  You don’t deserve my home made ketchup.

Chris – Just give me the ketchup already.

Me – NO.  You do not fully appreciate the wholesomeness of this organic ketchup and all the hard work and taste testing that went in to making it.  You are not worthy of this ketchup.

A brief struggle over the ketchup bottle ensued, which he won….only because he was squeezing and I didn’t want ketchup on my shirt…plus the kids were yelling “MOM!  Give daddy the ketchup bottle!!!”  Those stinkin’ kids ALWAY take his side.

He then gingerly dipped and tasted a teeny tiny portion of the ketchup, turned up his nose, and pronounced it ‘okay’.

Let me just say that when I take dinners to new mommies, they ALWAY rave about how yummy it is.  They ask for my recipes and everything.  And the stuff I bake and take to so.zo, Sam always gushes about!  It’s some good stuff.  Or if it’s not….at least Sam is nice enough to gush over it anyway and throw an appropriate amount of it away each day so that I’m fooled into believing it sells.
